Train

Today was a day for letting the train take the strain. Despite some slow traffic on the A2 I made my first of the day, the Ebbsfleet flyer, with a few minutes to spare, before shuttling across on the underground from St Pancras to Euston.

My destination for the day was Birmingham, and buying my ticket at Euston was something of a surprise - a day return came out at 254 (pounds that is - I would type the symbol, but I can't find one on my American keyboard!). I took a deep breath and paid, but was grateful for the knowledge that I wasn't actually paying. Admittedly this was a first class ticket, but hey, them's the rules, and I did do some work during the journey!

Virgin were keen to point out that it wasn't just a Virgin Train, it was a Virgin Pendolino Train (no, it didn't mean much to me either - see here for a bit more info), and they were clearly hoping to sell lots of first class tickets, as the first four or five carriages were all allocated to it. I think there were two other people in the one that I chose!

(As an aside about Euston, walking down the slope from the main concourse to the platforms reminded me of a trip taken from Euston to Manchester over twenty years ago - on my way to visit my cool sister at university. I listened to my new Pet Shops Boys album on my walkman all the way on that journey!)

As part of Virgin's price justification, food and drinks were brought round, and in fairness, the bacon and eggs, coffee and juice weren't bad, but even so, that's a really expensive breakfast.

I arrived in Birmingham in plenty of time for my meeting, and after that we went out for a retirement lunch for one of my fellow directors (who joined the firm in 1973). We went to the Marco Pierre White steakhouse on the 25th floor of a building called the Cube. The views in the spring sunshine were impressive. I would have taken a picture or two, but due to a distinct lack of local knowledge, I didn't really know what I was looking at!

I have to confess to a certain feeling of envy towards my retiring colleague insofar as he will be enjoying a life of leisure from next Monday onwards. Mind you, he has been at it for 22 years longer than me, and fingers crossed, I might be able to pack it all in in fewer years from now than that.

Less work was done on the way back to London on the train, as I divided my time between reading my book and gazing out of the window. From around Rugby to Milton Keynes, we were following the route of a canal for lots of the time, and seeing the narrow boats either going nowhere or puttering slowly along did look very appealing. The idea of taking several days to travel from London to Birmingham rather than an hour and a half sounds like progress to me. Looking forward to our summer holiday of puttering along.

Back at Euston, as the weather was still lovely, I walked the short distance back to St Pancras, and went through the courtyard of the British Library. The courtyard was full of people enjoying the warm weather, reading and chatting, and I felt particularly out of place, walking through in my suit, carrying my work bag.

Still, picture and wisdom of the day was provided by a big sign on the side of the library.

One liners

Blog turning into a series of one liners.

Might as well tweet if this is all I'm going to manage.

Maybe I should try to write a bit earlier rather than last thing before bed.

For something more interesting try here.

Barley limping - may be a trip to the vet tomorrow ...

Spring

A couple of signs that maybe Spring is in the air:

Firstly, we have a car-load of stuff waiting to go to the tip in the morning, having made a start on the grand sort out.

Secondly, the golf is getting interesting, and there are only three and a half weeks to go until the first major of the year. McIroy and Woods are both in the top 10 with one round to go in Miami - mind you, Watson is looking pretty impressive right now. (I might make myself a little unpopular on holiday in the Forest of Dean over Easter, as Augusta will be kicking off half way through our week there. I wonder how many TVs the lodges have?!)

Lewis

One of the tweeters that I follow is called @CSLewisDaily, and it does exactly as the name suggests and provides a daily C.S.Lewis quote to its followers. Well, today it has been celebrating the fact that it now has over half a million followers, and to mark the occasion has tweeted the five most popular quotes (based on the number of re-tweets that they have had).

Here are three that I particularly liked:

"Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less."

"To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you."

"I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen, not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else."

Knee news

So, Nicky has injections and physio planned to help her knee, with the likelihood of an operation at some point in the future. We had a joint trip to the hospital this evening, and I have clean new bandages to show for it as well. Likely that we'll both be back there next week at some point. Becoming a bit of a second home!

Oxygen

A cup of tea and an oxygen mask. Thin blood makes changing dressings a challenge.

Pie

This week is National Pie Week (or something like that) and so to mark the occasion Nicky made our favourite sausage and bean pie for this evening's tea.

I've just had a second helping - my excuse is that I'm not allowed to eat anything after 6.30 tomorrow morning, so I need a bit of fuelling up now!

Weekend

And so a busy but enjoyable weekend comes to a close. Right now I'm sat on the sofa, laptop on lap, dog snoring next to me, playing a couple of games of scrabble, and watching the last few holes of the golf - looking like Rory might become the world number one if he can hold it together for the last few holes.

Yesterday we made our way over to Bracknell once Nicky had done her lesson for the day, and it was lovely to see the Pitt family. We enjoyed the traditional lunch (love that chilli!), some good games (of football for some, and scrabble for others) and before we knew it, it was time to head over to the theatre.

Oliver was excellent, and Henry looked like he was having fun. Special mention for the 16 year-old who played Fagin - he was definitely the star of the show.

Back to the Bearman's, and by the time we got back it was pretty late. Nicky and I stayed up even later with Nigel and Teresa chatting over some cheese and wine for supper, and Henry and Jake disappeared off to the "den", not to be seen again until about 11 this morning.

Late breakfast today whilst we watched the surprising snow settle, before heading home this afternoon.

Football news mixed from today:

Jake's team (the one that he plays for) won. My team (the one that I support) didn't.

Round One

First round of golf of the year today - played at the Crowborough Beacon Golf Club.

We managed to fit in 18 holes despite only teeing off at quarter past two.

Let's just say that I hit the ball a large number of times, and looking for positives, I have set a baseline from which I can aim to improve in my quest for the mythical two digit round in 2012!

Visitors

Jake had some famous visitors at school today, as John Bishop, Frank Skinner and Chris Moyles popped in as part of John Bishop's Sport Relief challenge. They went to Jake's school as it was the school to raise the most money in the entire country as part of the last Sport Relief.

I would post one or two of the pictures that Jake took on his phone, but as it's not connected to the cloud I haven't got them.

So, instead you'll have to make do with a picture of the burger that Nicky had for lunch!
